Fill A Bucket!

Recently I listened to an online seminar from Edutopia, about Social and Emotional Learning, and learned some valuable information about how important it is for children to be socially and emotionally happy before much learning can occur.  After that, I searched and found this book that I thought would be very effective with our Pre-K and K students.
This book was simple and to the point:  Each one of us has an invisible bucket, and each day, from the time we awake, someone is filling or dipping out of our buckets.  When people are kind to us our bucket is getting filled.  When people are unkind they are dipping out of our buckets!  (bucket dippers)
Then we asked for people to share.  We have heart cut-outs, trophies and balloons, that we have written instances of bucket filling that has occurred at Franklin Elementary.  I have two buckets, the blue one is for Franklin Elementary and the green one is for book characters.  For instance, when we shared Cinderella, the students filled out a trophy for Cinderella, that she forgave her stepmother and stepsisters at the end.  They were quick to point out that they had been bucket dippers to Cinderella.  We are going to continue to fill our buckets throughout the rest of this school year.  It has been a creative way to analyze what we are reading as well!

This has noticeably helped with behavior...students are saying don't be a bucket dipper and are brainstorming ways they can turn around the negative situation and be a bucket filler!

Have you filled a bucket today??????
