Course Overview

Welcome to Algebra II!  In this course we will explore and interpret real-world problems as well as patterns and their representations (expressions, equations, graphs).  We will also explain mathematical relationships verbally and symbolically.  Graphing calculators will be used to help you analyze data and recognize patterns more easily. Calculators will be used in class, on homework and on assessments.  Throughout Algebra II, we will build a mathematical foundation so you can make connections among mathematical concepts, across disciplines and in everyday experiences. My goal is for you to master the math concepts that will make you college or/ and career ready.  The designation of college/career ready is based on your performance on a variety of state/national assessments.  If you bring your curiosity and willingness to work hard, then I promise to do my best to help you prepare for the future.

Homework

Homework is required each day and will be monitored through think, pair, share buddies.  Questions and discussion are expected and encouraged.  Use a pencil, show your work, and use your textbook, notebook and possibly the internet as a resource. Teams/ Groups of three to four people will be assigned for practicing some skills and concepts.  Each group is responsible for monitoring their progress with new concepts.  Extra help or tutoring will be available when the team or individuals do not master a skill or concept.   Homework not completed in class should require no more than 30- 45 minutes of your time outside of class.

Absences and Makeup work:  When you return from an absence, you have three days to complete missing work and one week to makeup tests.   Makeup tests are given before or after school to prevent missing more content.  Work turned in after one week will not be counted for a grade. You are responsible for the following:

  1. Turning in any homework that was due the day(s) of your absence
  2. Reading the textbook, borrowing notes or staying before or after school to learn the concepts missed
  3. Updating your class notebook and completing missed assignments
  4. Participation in field trips is a privilege accompanied by responsibility not an absence.  You must be passing the class and complete any tests or assignments before the trip.  Your sponsor must post the trip two weeks prior to the departure date.

Grading Policy

Your trimester grade is based on points you earn on homework, quizzes (formative and summative), your notebook, class participation, and assessments.  End of trimester exams will count 200 points, unit tests 100 points and quizzes and notebook grades approximately 20 points. Progress reports are available in the middle of each trimester and grades are also accessible on line. Tutoring is available after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3 until 4.  Math help is also available from your teacher during academic time.  Eighty percent of your final grade for the class will be determined by the three trimester grades and twenty percent will be determined by your score on the end of course exam given by the state.
