Introduction to Social Studies

Welcome to the Wildcat Academy and my classroom. I look forward to teaching you this year and hope that you are just as excited to get your high school career underway. Since you are now in high school, you should be ready to work and study. Fortunately, only good things can come from hard work and my goal is for each and every student to exit this class well-prepared for the challenges that await in our social studies curriculum.

I am most easily reached at school after 2:00 pm and at home before 10 pm. I also try to get to school early each day and am available for extra help and/or meetings at that time as well.

Come to class prepared each day.
Be in your seat & ready to learn when the tardy bell rings.
Failure to follow the rules above will result in disciplinary action up to & including office referral.
If electronic devices, including but not limited to IPods, cell phones, portable gaming devices and laptops, are brought to school FSHS Policy is that they can only be used in the hallway or the cafeteria during a student’s lunch period. If a phone, etc is seen or heard anywhere else in the building, it will be taken up & turned in to the office.
I am a firm believer in giving students every possible chance to succeed. Consequently, I give a large number of assignments, both large and small, throughout the trimester. Along the same lines, I am open to providing extra credit assignments to interested students. Generally speaking, assignments fall into six categories with their value varying according to difficulty, length and other factors. These are listed below.
Tests: 100-200 Points Projects: 100-200 Points
“Pop” Quizzes: 10-30 Points Homework/Classwork: 10-100 Points
“Regular” Quizzes: 25-50 Points Supply Checks: 10 Points
Missing assignments will be recorded as zeroes until they are turned in. Late assignments will result in points (generally 25% each day) being deducted.
Makeup Testing/Makeup Work
Should a student miss classtime for any reason it is his/her responsibility to meet with the teacher regarding work that needs to be made-up. Should he/she miss a test or quiz a copy of it will be put in the makeup file for completion during makeup testing time. Should a student not be able to makeup a test during these times, he/she needs to make alternate arrangements with Mr. Dobbs. Test/quiz grades are recorded as zeros until they are made up. All tests/quizzes will remain in the makeup file for one week. After this, they will be thrown away and the student will receive a zero for the assignment.

End of Trimester Review/End of Trimester Comprehensive Exam (Week of November 6-9)
During our study of US Government, we will frequently refer to & discuss the 2012 Presidential Campaign & Election. Therefore, it is expected that students spend some time outside of class learning about the candidates & issues.

Unit Four: Microeconomics 1 ½ Weeks
Unit Five: Consumerism 5 Weeks
End of Trimester Review/End of Trimester Comprehensive Exam (Week of May 13-15)
Students should expect a test at the end of each unit. Each test will consist of multiple choice & constructed response questions.
