Safety in our schools is paramount to everything we do. With the recent tragedies in schools involving gun violence and loss of life, we are all rightly concerned about the safety of our students, staff, and visitors in our schools. Though we have made many safety improvements over the last 15 years, it is imperative we always look for ways to improve safety in our schools. To that end, the Simpson County Board of Education approved the formation of a School Safety Taskforce to review the best practices available to improve school safety and to make recommendations back to them for consideration. The approved membership follows:
2 Board members – Nancy Uhls; Heidi Estes
4 Parents – Cindy Burk; Mika Anne Forshee; Josh Jones; Kent Wilson
2 Students – Emma Jones; Will Randolph
2 Community Members – Charlie McCutchen, Jr.; Dick Downey
8 School Staff – Tim Schlosser; Jeremy Loveall; Will Conyers; Robert McDougal; Emily Satterly; Dawn Spencer; Sabrina Bowen
1 District Staff – Joey Kilburn (Chair)
1 Community Partner – Bob Palmer, Director of Simpson County Emergency Management
TOTAL MEMBERSHIP - 20
Ex Officio Members – Craig Delk; Amanda Spears; Jim Flynn
Key Community Partners and Resources – Simpson County Sheriff Jere Dee Hopson; Franklin Police Chief Roger Solomon; Simpson County Jailer Eric Vaughn; Simpson County Fire Chief Leslie Goodrum; Simpson County EMS Dale McCreary; City of Franklin; Simpson County Fiscal Court
We invite members of the community to send their ideas and concerns to me or anyone on the Task Force. As the work of the Task Force progresses, we will provide updates along with any final actions by the Simpson County Board of Education.
Remember, school safety is a value and responsibility we all share! Let’s continue to work together to make our schools as safe as possible!
