2018 Operation Preparation

The Vision of Simpson County Schools is to prepare our graduates for success in life!  An important part of our Life-Ready Vision is our students being prepared for college and careers upon graduation. To impact the college/career readiness of our students, we need your help in our Operation Preparation initiative.  Operation Preparation was started six years ago to bring community volunteers into our schools to encourage and advise 8th and 10th grade students on college and careers.  Kentucky’s current statewide college/career readiness rate is 65.6 percent. Last year, FSHS achieved a college/career readiness (CCR) rate of 85.9 percent, even with changes that set the bar even higher!  Our ultimate goal is to graduate 100 percent of our students meeting the college/career ready benchmarks.  According to the Center for Education and the Workforce, in the next 4-6 years, more than half the jobs in Kentucky and more than 60 percent of jobs nationwide will require postsecondary education (either a two-year or four-year degree). Most of the remaining jobs will require at least some training after high school. With a statewide student-to-counselor ratio of about 450:1, many school counselors are overloaded with the number of students to whom they must provide services.

2018-2019 District Calendar Feedback

It is time to get your feedback on our 2018-2019 School Calendar!  State statute now requires we utilize a calendar committee with specified membership including certified and classified staff, along with a board member, parents, and community members.  Our calendar committee has met and looked at a calendar with corresponding dates to this year and past years.  Ultimately, the Simpson County Board of Education is responsible for setting the school calendar and we want your input.  The link below will allow you to access a short survey on the calendar.  Additionally, I have attached a draft calendar for your review.

All SCS Students will receive Free Breakfast and Lunch Next Year!

Great news for Simpson County students! At the May Board meeting, Simpson County Schools was approved to participate in the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) program which will provide free breakfast and lunch to all SCS students! CEP is a universal meal service option created through the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act that became available to all States a few years ago.

We will continue to offer the good quality meals we are serving today. Students will still need to get all the required components of the meal at breakfast (Entrée, Fruit/Juice & Milk) and at Lunch (Entrée, Fruit/Juice, Vegetable & Milk) to qualify for this program. Ala Carte items or “extras” will continued to be items that must be purchased. In order to make CEP a huge success, we will need the support from all staff members encouraging all of our students to eat breakfast and lunch with us every day!

At the end of the school year, we will evaluate the CEP program to ensure that we can continue offer it. If you have any questions or concerns, please direct those to Food Service Director Sarah Richardson – sarah.richardson@simpson.kyschools.us

Thank you for your support of this exciting program!
